Ethics And Its Absolute Status - 1068 Words

For our weekly discussion, we have been asked if profiling is moral ethical or neither. Chapter four covers the various ideas of ethics and their absolute status. For the purpose of our discussion, the individual author will break down the different ideas from the text and authors he has studied to define morality, and in the second to use those findings and apply them to profiling. Ethical Universalism and Relative Ethics. â€Å"Ethical thought is still largely dominated by the abstract notion of an isolated individual man who applies the absolute criterion of a good which is good in itself and has to make his decision incessantly and exclusively between this clearly recognized good and an equally clearly recognized evil. (Bonhoeffer,†¦show more content†¦As police officers, the Sermon on the Mount also implies â€Å"Blessed are the peacemakers for they will see God.† (Matthew 5:9, NIV) If there is no other reason to treat people with the best ethical standard, the basis of Christ’s Sermon on the Mount of â€Å"so in everything, do to others what would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law of the Prophets.† (Matthew 7:12, NIV) The traffic stop can be one of the most tricky situations to use these teachings effectively. Ethics, Morality, and Profiling â€Å"In ethics literature, the debate about profiling focuses on the nature of profiling and when (if ever) profiling is morally justifiable.† (Rubel, 2013, page 210) An exact definition of profiling has never been accepted by universities and the law enforcement community. Until there is an agreement, it will be difficult to say what is officially acceptable and what is not. It is clear, however; â€Å"at least some types of racial profiling in some circumstances impede on human rights.† (Rubel, 2013, page 210) For example, the case in Minnesota this summer was of significant interests. A black male driver was stopped for a violation. He was armed, had a firearm permit, and was with his wife. The officer eventually shot and killed the driver. What was interesting is that to have a permit to carry a firearm, one must have a little to no criminal record.
